Italian Restaurants: Vivo
Wednesday, 2003 October 22 - 10:14 pm
The newcomer to the Glenwood South scene, Vivo seems destined for trendiness, if they can just get over themselves.

Vivo, the new Italian restaurant in the Glenwood South district, seems to be searching for an identity. On the one hand, you find a menu that seems to be trying to one-up 518 West, Vivo's classy neighbor down the street. On the other hand, you find an atmosphere specifically tailored towards attracting the Bogart's/Sullivan's crowd, with its upscale furnishings and trendy look. The result is something of a mish-mash, leaving me with the feeling that I was paying more for the effect than the food itself.

It's hard to complain about the food, though; most of the dishes are tasty and well-prepared, particularly the appetizers and salads. I found some of the entrees a bit heavy-handed, but that's partly just personal preference.

The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, but sometimes a bit unattentive, especially if you're out on the patio. (It's worth it to sit outside, though, if the weather is nice.)

You might find Vivo a better place to go for breakfast or lunch than for dinner; during the day, it doesn't seem like a place that's trying to be more popular than it deserves.
