Breaking Rumor: Apple "iWork" Office Suite | Monday, 2005 January 3 - 12:11 am |
Another Apple rumor in advance of the upcoming MacWorld Expo: an office application suite to succeed the aging AppleWorks 6. A new rumor to come out on the Mac rumor web: Apple is planning to introduce an office suite called "iWork". This suite will reportedly contain an updated version of Keynote, the PowerPoint-like presentation program, and a new application called Pages, which may be a word processor. There is no clear word on whether either program will also incorporate a spreadsheet or personal information manager. (My own speculation is that integration with Mail, iCal, and iSync are likely, so a new Outlook-like program will probably not appear. But a consumer-level spreadsheet/database application seems overdue.) A couple of reasons why this is plausible. One: AppleWorks, though still a pretty solid application, has not seen an update in quite a long time. Two: Keynote has not been updated since its introduction. Three: Microsoft's promise to continue producing Office for the Mac expired a couple of years ago (though a new version came out fairly recently, and Microsoft has not said they're abandoning it). Four: Office document compatibility has shown to be pretty easy to achieve, as OpenOffice, StarOffice, Keynote, and even TextEdit have shown. So far that's the third major rumor to come out about MacWorld. I'm a bit disappointed that no one's talking about speed bumps for the G5's; we're all still waiting for Steve Jobs to make good on his promise of 3.0 GHz. Oh, there was a bit of news about ATI's X800 card for the Mac; I wouldn't be surprised to see that either. |
