Apple Watch: New PowerMacs Tomorrow? | Tuesday, 2005 April 26 - 10:23 pm |
Amazon.com today appeared to have accidentally posted specifications for the next PowerMac G5. Corroborating a rumor published on ThinkSecret.com, Amazon.com posted a page advertising a dual-processor 2.7 GHz PowerMac G5 for sale. Problem is, Apple hasn't actually announced that machine yet. SOMEBODY'S head is going to roll, and no doubt Steve Jobs will be holding the axe himself. There's nothing Apple hates more than somebody breaking a story too early. But actually, in this case, I don't know how upset Apple will be. It's a pretty minor revision to the product line, and I think Apple doesn't want to make a big deal about it anyway. With Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" being released on Friday, I'm sure they want to keep the attention focused squarely on that. Anyway, it seems almost certain that this machine will be available tomorrow (Wednesday). Various Mac discussion forums are full of folks complaining that it's not a significant enough enhancement. They want dual-core processors, they want 3 GHz, they want PCI Express, they want an NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or an ATI X800 video card. I'm wondering, would it be better if Apple went longer between product releases, so they could make a bigger splash with each one? I think Apple fans are getting spoiled by some of the blockbuster announcements, like the iMac G5 or the Mac Mini. I think this highlights the danger of some of the Mac rumor web sites, and why Apple doesn't really consider them to be their friends. It can be damaging if a rumor site hypes up some fictional product, and Apple's actual product doesn't measure up to it. Mainstream news media reports will pick up on the rumors, and then say things like "Apple Fails to Deliver Expected Enhancements". That can't be good for anyone. |

Sure enough, 2.7 GHz PowerMacs. Other than the dual-layer 16X DVD burners, not much else in the way of enhancements. Still tempting... but I'll wait. |
