American Idol 2009 Week 3 Performances | Wednesday, 2009 March 25 - 9:19 pm |
Alexis Grace went home after her "forgettable" performance last week. This week: Motown. Will anyone be able to make anything sound current? Matt Giraud "Let's Get It On". I admit, this is better than I expected it to be. It's a bit old-fashioned, a little too Tom Jones for my taste. I still find him hard to look at, but this isn't bad. Predictably, the judges love it. 8. Kris Allen "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You". I think this is pretty unchallenging, vocally... and the performance seems like a tipsy guy getting up in his neighborhood bar to perform. It's a little too safe. He's going to lose votes to Matt tonight. 6. Scott Macintyre "You Can't Hurry Love". Hmm, I started to like this, and then he seemed to struggle with the lyrics a little. And sometimes his vocals get really shaky. His runs are a little off... and at the end, the backup singers seem like they're singing a different song altogether. It's better than he's been, but still not good enough. 5. Megan Joy "For Once In My Life". You know, I still like her, and I like her style, but vocally this is a train wreck. The pitch is all over the place. Ergh. (Ooh, Randy also used the term "train wreck".) She's in real trouble tonight, I think. 3. Anoop Desai "Ooh Baby Baby". This is, uh, odd. His falsetto seems just a little off, he keeps breathing loudly into the mike, and the performance isn't terribly original. But he did pretty well with a challenging song. 7. Michael Sarver "Ain't Too Proud to Beg". Uh, this is just plain bad. He's like an NFL quarterback getting up to sing as a novelty. The arrangement is horrible, his pitch on the higher notes is waaay off, and he's just so dang cheesy throughout. This may be the end for him. 2. Lil Rounds "Heat Wave". Oh, how cute with the old fashioned hairdo. This genre should suit her perfectly, but it's just okay. Maybe she's over-singing a little; it sounds a bit shouty and pitchy in parts. And there's really nothing novel about it. A poor song choice, for sure, on a night where she should have been the clear favorite. 6. Adam Lambert "Tracks of My Tears". Wow, wild retro look. This is an interesting acoustic arrangement; I think I like it. And unlike Anoop, he really can hit that falsetto. I like seeing this quiet side of him. I just don't see how the likes of Matt and Kris can hope to keep up with this. 10. Danny Gokey "Get Ready". Hard to follow what Adam just did, but this is really effortlessly solid. A typical brilliant performance from him. He'll have nothing to worry about. 9. Allison Iraheta "Papa Was a Rolling Stone". Oh, this is a brilliant song choice. This is downright sexy. She may be a bit of a dark horse next to Adam and Danny, but she might be my favorite now. 10. |
