Matt finally went home last week. This week: rock songs... as solos and as duets... with Slash as a mentor. Ooookay. Adam Lambert (solo) "Whole Lotta Love", Led Zeppelin. Seems like a good song choice for him, but I'm not totally sold on this performance. In some ways it's too copycat, and in some ways it's too theatrically Adam. Not terrible, but I don't think it's quite as good as the judges are making it out to be. 8. Allison Iraheta (solo) "Cry Baby", Janis Joplin. Sometimes I think she's the only one with legitimate commercial potential. This is solid. Will it connect with younger viewers? Hard to say, but it's a strong performance of a difficult song. 9. Kris and Danny (duet) "Renegade" by Styx. Huh. So, this format really highlights Kris' vocal weaknesses. Danny is killing it vocally, but huh, the style is not very believable for him. How do you rate a duet? Kris 6, Danny 8. Kris Allen (solo) "Come Together", Beatles. This is a hard song to cover well, and... yeah, it's a little weak. Still not believable, like a teenager trying to imitate a rock star... and vocally it's a mess. This may be the end for him. 5. Danny Gokey (solo) "Dream On", Aerosmith. I seem to remember Michael Johns trying this and failing, and it seems like Danny's having similar trouble. It's such a shouty song and it's so tough to actually sing; it'd be better if he'd tried some kind of different arrangement. And the shriek at the end, eek. Maybe one of the worst performances we've seen from him. And why would you perform Aerosmith wearing a vest? 5. Adam and Allison (duet) "Slow Ride", Foghat. I know this song well from playing Guitar Hero. Allison's main challenge is to make sure she doesn't get overshadowed in this performance. I don't like either of them in this song. As a duet they're really not together, and individually I'm just not feeling they've got the grit for this song. Somehow the judges love it; I don't. Adam 7, Allison 7. I think Allison was the strongest overall tonight. Kris should probably go home, but Danny certainly didn't help his own cause. |

These are my fantasy picks for next week Adam - Show Must Go On, Queen Inside my heart is breaking /My makeup may be flaking But my smile still stays on My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies, Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die, I can fly, my friends The Show must go on! /The Show must go on! I'll face it with a grin /I'm never giving in / On with the show I'll top the bill / I'll overkill / I have to find the will to carry on On with the / On with the show! Danny - Against All Odds, Phil Collins (maximum sympathy votes) How can you just walk away from me / when all I can do is watch you leave 'cos we shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears. You're the only one who really knew me at all. So take a look at me now - well there's just an empty space And there's nothing left here to remind me Just the memory of your face. Oh take a look at me now / there's just an empty space And you coming back to me is against the odds And that's what I've got to face. Kris - Every Day I Write the Book, Elvis Costello and one for the sadly departed Iraheta, Alison, Elvis Costello Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking when I hear the silly things that you say. I think somebody better put out the big light, 'cause I can't stand to see you this way. Alison, I know this world is killing you. Oh, Alison, my aim is true. |
