College Football 2012: Week 6 Recap and Week 7 Preview
Saturday, 2012 October 13 - 11:40 am
Michigan and N.C. State are both building off important wins from last week.

Michigan 44, Purdue 13
Michigan vs Illinois

Michigan played its best game of the season, with a thoroughly dominating win over Purdue. This was really some throwback Michigan football: a steady ball-control run game and a stifling defense. There were some rumblings about Purdue winning the Big Ten title before this game; now, Michigan might be the front runner.

The only thing that didn't really go well was the continued inability of Fitzgerald Toussaint to run the ball, but that had a lot to do with Purdue's defensive schemes. Otherwise: Denard had a spectacular day, the defense was heroic, and Al Borges called a good game.

Heroes: Denard Robinson, Jake Ryan, Michigan DL.

Goats: None.

Grades: Offense B+, Defense A+.

The Illini are not good this year. It's hard to see how you can downgrade from Ron Zook, but they've found a way. The defense may put up a respectable show, as they have some serviceable defensive ends, but the offense consists of Nathan Scheelhaase and nobody else. Now I'm always worried about over-predicting in favor of Michigan, but holy smokes this looks like a mismatch.

Prediction: Michigan 38, Illinois 9.

N.C. State 17, #3 Florida State 16
N.C. State (bye)

Holy smokes, this was something no one saw coming. The first half of the game was all FSU and it looked like N.C. State was in for a long day. But the FSU offense was inconsistent, converting only 3 of 15 third downs on the day, and that let NCSU hang around long. When Glennon threw a fourth-down touchdown with 16 seconds remaining, the stunning upset was complete.

I can't quite figure out this Wolfpack squad, except that it seems unpredictability is the only predictable thing. This, like many State teams in the past, has enough talent to pull off some miraculous wins only to implode against inferior talent. Is that a knock on the coaching staff? Maybe.

State gets a bye this week to tune up for a bad Maryland team on October 20th.

Week 6 Notable Games
Northwestern's bubble finally burst as they lost to an improving Penn State team 39-28.

Michigan State struggled to get by a bad Indiana team 31-27. MSU was significantly overrated at the beginning of the season, if you ask me.

Speaking of overrated, Wisconsin did manage to beat Illinois 31-14.

#12 Ohio State is looking awfully good; they crushed #21 Nebraska 63-38. Nebraska's defense remains a work in progress.

#2 Oregon pounded #23 Washington 52-21. I'd really love to see an Oregon-Alabama matchup right now.

#10 Florida upset #4 LSU 14-6. Florida is looking pretty impressive too.

#6 South Carolina stomped #5 Georgia 35-7. There are many fantastic SEC match ups coming up in the next few weeks.

#8 West Virginia beat #11 Texas in a 48-45 shootout.

#9 Notre Dame beat Miami FL 41-3. That makes me feel slightly better about Michigan's loss to the Irish; the Irish defense may actually be that good.

Iowa State upset #15 TCU 37-23.

Arizona lost to #18 Stanford 54-48 in a wild overtime game.

Cal crushed beat #25 UCLA 43-17 in a shocking upset.

Week 7 Games to Watch on TV
At noon we've got #15 Texas vs. #13 Oklahoma on ABC, for you Big-12 folks. Iowa plays Michigan State on ESPN, and Wisconsin plays Purdue on BTN.

At 2:30, UNC plays Miami FL on EPSNU; that game will be of local interest.

At 3:30, #17 Stanford plays at #7 Notre Dame on NBC in what should be a great game. Illinois plays Michigan on ESPN/ABC.

At 7:00, #11 USC plays at Washington.

This week's Game of the Week is #3 South Carolina at #9 LSU on ESPN at 8:00.
