Sports: Thugs of the Week
Sunday, 2003 October 12 - 12:00 pm
Sports are great, but when testosterone-filled rage triumphs over sportsmanship, it ruins it for everyone. Here are two people who should be kicked out of the sport.

First: Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox. Yes, I know their rivalry with the Yankees is intense. But does that mean it's okay to throw pitches at people's heads? Or that it's okay to grab 72-year-old coach Don Zimmer and throw him to the ground, sending him to the hospital? There's just no place for that in baseball. Now I'm rooting for the Yankees.

Second: Robert Reynolds of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He drove his fingers into Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi's throat while he was at the bottom of a pile, injuring him severely enough to force him out of the game. I was tickled to watch backup quarterback Matt Schabert almost singlehandedly defeat the Buckeyes, finally exposing them as the pretenders that they are. I have a lot of respect for Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, but if he has any class, he'll throw Reynolds off the team.
