Society: Massachusetts Allows Gay Marriage | Tuesday, 2004 February 10 - 11:12 pm |
The Christian right is in an uproar about a recent Massachusetts court ruling that gay people should legally be allowed to be married. I have to wonder: what's all the fuss? What is it about gay people, and gay marriage, that people are so afraid of? I know that some people still think of homosexuality as something evil that people choose to do, along the lines of adultery and murder and such. I can't even talk to people like this; there's no amount of science or logic that will combat irrational belief of this magnitude. (Why on earth would someone choose a life of ostracism and ridicule? And what, arbitrary religious notions aside, is so evil about homosexuality?) I don't think that's the main reason people fear gay marriage. I think some straight people (or "breeders", to use the gay parlance) just want something to call their own. Having gay people marry is like having your rival high school use your school's fight song. It's like Russians playing rock and roll music. It's like Margaret Cho telling a Denis Leary joke. My feeling is this: let gay people marry each other. Then they can be just as miserable as the rest of us. |
