The Pope
Saturday, 2005 April 2 - 11:14 am
Reporting live from the Vatican.

Oh wait... April Fools Day was yesterday. I'm not ACTUALLY at the Vatican with Wonkette (but that would ROCK, wouldn't it?)

So the Pope doesn't appear to have much longer in this world.

I am not a Catholic, and as some of you know, I'm not a big fan of organized religion in general, but I do have respect for John Paul II as a worldwide peacemaker. In particular, I think highly of his efforts to reach out to the Muslim world. Today even Jews and Muslims are praying for him. Can you imagine? When was the last time Christians around the world prayed for an Ayatollah?

It's good to hear that most people are praying for a peaceful and dignified death. That is in stark contrast to the Terri Schiavo mess... I don't see any protesters demanding that we stuff the Pope full of tubes. Thank God for that.

I was a little bit alarmed to read this quote from Maria Danecka in Poland: "If he were to leave us, we won't have anybody to show us the way, to help us understand the world." Uh, wow. Are there adults who still need someone else to explain the world to them? Is that what religion is, to some people? "I've never learned to think for myself, so please give us more Pope."

I've never believed, as Sinead O'Connor does, that the Roman Catholic Church is inherently evil. But I also don't believe that it's inherently good. Either way would imply a belief in absolute good or evil; that's a concept I reject. The Church, its members, and its leaders, are simply human. They have their strengths and foibles, and their tendencies towards certain ideals which some embrace and some reject. Am I surprised about the scandals about sexual abuse? No more surprised than I would be with any other men who have celibacy foisted on them, and who hang around with young boys all the time. Hmm, Michael Jackson...

Anyway... as of this writing, the Pope is still alive and drifting in and out of consciousness, as a vigil is being kept in St. Peter's basilica. To the Pope, I say shalom, spokój, and peace.
