The Colorado Left Lane Law
Monday, 2005 April 4 - 9:01 pm
Apparently Colorado is serious about not letting people plug up the left lane of freeways.

About nine months ago, Colorado passed a law that says you can't drive in the far left lane of a multi-lane freeway if you're not passing someone. In other words, keep right except to pass. The law applies to freeways that have a speed limit of 65 MPH or higher, and it only applies if traffic is not so congested that the right lanes are occupied. They began handing out tickets for this about three months ago, and now they're averaging about five tickets a day.

They have a little brochure explaining the law, and the brochure has this picture in it:

Hey Colorado, do you mean to tell me that no one has updated your stock photo collection in forty years?

I've read some complaints about this law, but I'm totally in favor of it. Don't go slow in the left lane, okay? There's an order and a hierarchy to freeway driving, and if you mess it up, it causes problems for everyone. I wish we would pass this law here, too. Actually, I wish we would require all drivers to know the rules instinctively so we don't NEED laws like this. Say what you want about the Germans, but at least they know how to DRIVE. Rechts fahren!
