American Idol, Week 2: The Guys
Wednesday, 2007 February 28 - 8:29 am
The 10 remaining men compete. They improve on last week's performances.

Phil: 8/10.
Pitchy near the start, and on low notes. Chorus is better. Lacks a little energy. Randy likes it. Paula likes the tone of his voice, says it's radio-ready. Simon has mixed feelings: he's unoriginal, but he liked the end; he's a very good karaoke singer, but he'll be back next week.

Jared: 7/10.
Marvin Gaye, ambitious. Much better than last week, but some pitchiness, a little corny and old-fashioned. Randy says it was a little pitchy but he liked it. Paula says it's a song he doesn't have to push. Simon says it reminds him of a cabaret singer on the Love Boat.

A.J.: 7/10.
It's an interesting song. But a little Broadway, maybe, and doesn't have much to it. Good tone though. Randy says he's got skills. Paula says he's got a good voice. Simon says it was "nearly" very good, and that he looked "strangely comfortable".

Sanjaya: 4/10.
Interesting new look. Good tone but lacks power, and lacks energy. There's lots he could have done with this, but it ends up like a high school recital. He's in trouble this week. Randy says it's like a bad high school talent show. Paula says he was in pitch, but says he needs to pick younger songs. Simon says it was a ghastly lunch where afterwards the parents asked the kids to get up and sing.

Chris S: 8/10.
This is a much better song choice than last week (a song Taylor sang last year), and he sounds pretty good. He needs to put a little personality into it, though. Randy says he says it's a good choice and that he has skills, and a big voice. Paula says watch the pitch and the beat, but he's "real awesome". Simon says tonight he was a very good singer.

Nick: 6/10.
He's singing "Fever". He's sharp. This is a song that's been done so much better by so many other people. I'm not impressed. Randy says he's returned to his roots, though he's off-pitch and off-beat in spots. Paula says "go for it". Simon says it was good but it lacked charisma.

Blake: 9/10.
Again, he's showing everyone how to be contemporary. And he shows off a little beat-boxing, which will be his secret weapon all year. The falsetto shows off some versatility. Randy loved it. Paula says he's smart and unique. Simon says this week he copied the beginning from the video, the middle was good, and the end was off-key, so he was disappointed.

Brandon: 3/10.
Cyndi Lauper, interesting. But ugh, a really shaky start. Weak and unoriginal. This might be a season-ender for him. Randy says it was boring. Paula says she felt his heart. Simon says it's a singing competition, and that he's here to make a "wow" impact instead of all this "'I'm feeling it' nonsense."

Chris R: 10/10.
A much better song choice; young and hip, contemporary and energetic. Randy says he's in it to win it; the song was "hotter than the original". Paula loved it. Simon says it was the best performance tonight, by a mile.

Sundance: 8/10.
"Mustang Sally" is a song that suits him, and he's doing it well. No more ballads in the future please, Sundance. It's a little safe, but powerful and good. Randy says he dropped the bomb on it, and it was hot. Paula says she didn't know he had range like that, and it's his best vocal performance. Simon says he's glad we got the Sundance back that we liked, but that he could still do better.

Standings:
Blake: 9.0
Phil: 8.0
Chris R: 7.8
Chris S: 7.6
A.J.: 7.0
Sundance: 6.2
Nick: 5.2
Jared: 5.0
Sanjaya: 4.8
Brandon: 4.2

Eliminated:
Rudy 7.0
Paul 2.0
