Virginia Tech update; drinking news; Detroit playoff sports. So, not to make light of the Virginia Tech tragedy, but I found this funny: a Chinese guy who happens to be a gun enthusiast keeps getting mistaken for the Virginia Tech shooter. A news segment (reposted in his blog) inserted two pictures of him in a montage of photos of the shooter. They really don't look much alike. It's just that they're both Asian, and they both had pictures of themselves with guns. I'm not terribly outraged about this incident; I just think it's funny and a bit sad. If the guy wasn't a gun collector, I might have a little more sympathy. In a possibly related turn of events, Facebook took down all the pictures of him with guns, calling them "threatening". Another oddly inappropriate bit of humor from the Virginia Tech tragedy: I can just hear the photographer's thoughts: "What would best add to the sense of tragedy and pathos to this picture? Maybe a giant stuffed grinning gopher." In drinking news: fruity cocktails are good for you. Adding ethanol to drinks enhanced the anti-oxidant properties of strawberries and blackberries. Any "colored fruit" might similarly benefit. I guess we'll be drinking a lot more Sea Breezes at home now. Here's another drinking-related item: a well-reasoned piece on why we should lower the drinking age. I am a strong believer in the concept that when kids learn how to drink away from home, they don't learn how to drink responsibly. They have to learn the hard way how drinking affects their coordination, their inhibitions, and their self-control. And in sports news, how about them Red Wings? Calgary played about as dirty as they could play at the end of Game 5, and Detroit still prevailed. Some people think the punishment for Jamie McLennan's vicious slash on Johan Franzen was too severe. I don't think it was severe enough. It seems pretty plain that McLennan was sent in as a goon, a hit man. What's the point of a five game suspension on a guy who almost never plays anyway? He should be kicked out of the league, and maybe sent to jail. And if you ask me, the financial penalties on the coach and the organization could have been higher too. What if Franzen had been seriously hurt? What's the monetary value of a guy's career and a team's playoff chances? And oh yeah, the Pistons are looking pretty good too. I'm still not that into the NBA playoffs... maybe by the time Detroit gets to the next round, I'll start paying more attention. |
