A Useless Day
Saturday, 2005 March 5 - 10:43 pm
I did nothing today. Well, almost nothing.

So it's 10:00 on Saturday night and I am at home.

I had grand ambitions for today. I was going to go shopping, clean the house, work in the yard, go to the driving range, and cap it all off by going out to the wine bar... but no. Instead, I slept until noon and pretty much just puttered around the house all day. It's amazing how much time can be spent puttering. I'm pretty good at puttering. I am Ken the putterer.

I did manage to clean a little. I have so much crap I need to throw away. Why do I hang on to scrap pieces of flooring (the remnants from my living room and kitchen remodeling?) Because the OCD voice in my head says maybe I'll need it someday. The same goes for old Halloween costumes, computer parts, plastic souvenir beer cups from the Carolina Hurricanes, all sizes of cardboard boxes, school papers I wrote in high school, stuffed animals... the list goes on and on. I do my best to ignore the voice and just throw things away, but it's so hard. I know other people have this same problem; that's why that show "Clean Sweep" is so popular.

I also caught up on my backlog of newspapers. I do need to make a more concerted effort to read the newspaper every day; there were at least half a dozen articles about which I should have written topical blogs, but now it's too late. The problem is, unlike when I worked at Nortel, I can't sit around reading the paper during the day at work. Oh, speaking of Nortel... there's talk of a huge layoff coming soon for the RTP site. I still have a lot of friends that work there, and everyone's pretty nervous. The job market still sucks around here, and flooding the market with a thousand more engineers isn't going to help any.

But back to my dull day.

I watched golf. I don't go out of my way to watch golf, but I'll watch it if it's on, and Tiger Woods is in contention. Boy, he had a good day today... he shot a 63. He said he shot a good score as a birthday present to his dad. Awww. So does Dad get a share of the prize money too?

I read a bunch of blogs. I should mention that my three primary hobbies these days are: writing in my blog, reading other people's blogs, and checking to see how many people are reading my blog. It's a blog-eat-blog world. (I don't know what that means; I just wanted to say it.) I saw something clever on Sarah's page... she lists her blog links as "friends I wish I had". That's so true! I start to think about all these blog writers as if they were friends of mine; after all, I know so much about them. It's too bad we don't all live in the same town so we can all go out for martinis and Nine Inch Nails concerts and stuff. Geez, can you imagine the fun we'd have? If we didn't waste so much of our time puttering?

Suddenly it was evening. The day was shot. I said to myself, "Self, we should eat dinner and then go out somewhere. We should socialize. We should get a life." But after eating dinner, a feeling of fatigue came crashing down and all I wanted to do was nap. I had an idea that I would write a blog entry about how I was feeling tired and I was going to take a nap, but I was too tired even to do that. So I took my nap, and now I'm writing about it.

So now, I have grand ambitions for tomorrow. I'm going to go shopping, clean the house, work in the yard, go to the driving range, and cap it all off by going out to the wine bar.

Maybe.

Don't get me started.

My plan today was to run out and grab a quick lunch, then come back and work around the house. Instead I leave later then I meant to, get to Pizza Inn to see it packed, driver further away before turning around and heading back home. I drove and hour to end up at a place 5 minutes from my house. And of course the whole drive my son is asleep, cutting into his nap time (meaning even less work gets done).

Too late... you got me started.
