Leaving Me Speechless
Friday, 2005 June 10 - 10:25 pm
This has been a really weird night.

I'll tell you, Internets, this has got to be one of the worst fucking dating weeks ever.

So tonight's event was a reception for the President's Advisory Commission for Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders. It sounds very high-falutin', but really, it's not. When GunGirl told me about this thing, I pretty much figured it would be like going to your spouse's company Christmas party... you don't really go for the event itself, but you just want to be supportive of the person you're with. Just to be clear, this wasn't a date. But it had enough date-like qualities to be lumped into the general category.

Anyway, I thought it would be a chance for me to spend a little time with GunGirl, and maybe socialize with a few local Asian-Americans too. But as it turned out, the evening was doomed from the start. Just as GG got there, she told me she needed to make a phone call, a PRIVATE phone call, and she waved me off to go inside by myself... where I knew nobody, and where I knew absolutely nothing about what was going on. Ummmm... okay.

When GG did meet me inside, we said all of ten words to each other before she announced that she had to go mingle with other people. Ummmm... okay. Would we mingle together? Apparently not. So I was left to fend for myself. I'm normally not very good at that kind of thing, but fortunately, other people were friendly, and they came up to talk to me. The number one question was, "So, are you Japanese?" See, the people at this event, we had virtually nothing in common except for our Asianness. So that was always the icebreaker.

But the shocker was this: about half an hour into the event, just as dinner was being served, GG flags me down and tells me that she's leaving. She's going off to have dinner with PianoGirl. And the words that were welling up in my chest were "WHAT THE FUCK" but they never made it out, as we were in polite company. So I stood there and choked out "Ummmm... okay" as she left.

Isn't it a little weird to invite someone to an event, and then completely abandon the person there? Is it just me?

The remainder of the reception was, by and large, dreadful. I talked to the White House lackeys a little. Nina Collier was pleasant enough. Betty Wu, though, was just dripping with Republican snake oil, and she made me feel unclean just standing next to her.

The evening wasn't a total loss, thankfully. I met a nice girl whom we'll call BusinessGirl for now. So maybe at least I've made a new friend. And maybe next week will be somewhat less of a disaster than this one was.

Wow. There was a pre-dinner departure? And you stayed for the dinner? And where along the line did I miss that GunGirl was friends with PianoGirl? The only good thing about this night was your retelling of it, wherein "Ummm... okay" becomes the perfect euphemism for "WHAT THE FUCK?" Otherwise, I'm really sorry.

And, why did you stay?

Jerry: You kept making all the stops?!
Kramer: Well, people kept ringing the bell!

But really... I had already paid for dinner, and I was in the middle of talking to people who found me fascinating. Actually, I kind of had a Harold and Kumar flashback, and those of you who have seen that movie might know which scene I'm talking about.

Harold & Kumar that is funny. And makes me feel so bad for you. But maybe BusinessGirl will work out!
