My Personal BlogHer Agenda | Friday, 2005 July 22 - 11:19 pm |
My goals for the BlogHer conference might not exactly line up with everyone else's. It's just a week until BlogHer now, and I've been thinking about what I'm going to do there. Obviously, there'll be a whole bunch of drinking and socializing going on. I mean, my GOD, there's going to be some amazing women that I want to meet, including all of the BlogHer conference organizers, who seem utterly fascinating. Oh, and did I mention that leggy supermodel Mindy Lorimer of The Mommy Blog is going to be there? Um, whew. But honestly, it's not all about the "BlogHer Babes" (as Phil put it). There's some legitimate stuff I want to hear about too. For me, I guess my personal mission is to find out why women blog, especially when they write about personal things. I want to know: what is it they're looking to accomplish? I'm glad that the opening discussion is going to center on that topic. I'm also curious to see what the dynamic is going to be... whether, as the organizers have promised, they can keep this from being a "Boo, Evil Evil Men" session when they talk about the particular struggles that women bloggers might have. And then I'm interested to see if the men, who'll be 20% of the attendees, can keep their mouths shut and resist the natural male temptation to dominate the conversations. Here's the full Saturday agenda, and the tracks I'll be attending: 7:45am-8:30am: Breakfast. Fortunately my body will still be on Eastern Time, because no doubt I'll be fighting a wicked hangover at this point. 8:30am-9:00am: Welcome session. I need to sit near the front so I can get some good pictures. 9:00am-10:00am: "Debate: Play by today's rules, or change the game?" A discussion about women in blogging in general, the definition of blogging success, and the meritocracy of the blogosphere. This ought to be really interesting. 10:00am-10:15am: Pee break. Sorry ladies, but the men's room line will be waaaay shorter than the women's room line. Given an appropriate bribe, though, I'll escort you to a men's room stall and stand guard for you. 10:15am-11:00am: "Blog Crushes: Birds of a feather meet-up." This is so people with common interests can meet up. I'm not sure what I'm going to do here; in the list of groups that they've organized, I didn't see "Poop blogging" as an interest group. Nor did I see "Singles blogging", ahem. I might have to just follow my nose at this point. 11:00am-11:15am: Poop break. Maybe I'll have time to run back to my hotel room for this. 11:15am-12:15pm: This is the first "break-out" session, where the conference divides up into multiple mini-sessions. I think the one I'll attend is "Political Blogging Grows Up". Of the other tracks, three are about blog design and tools; I don't think I need to attend those. Another one is about "feminist hip-hop bloggers"; while that sounds interesting, I don't know that I'll really be able to relate to it. 12:15pm-1:30pm: "Flame, Blame, and Shame: What happens when women write for an audience of men and women who can write -- and bite -- back?" This one will be of particular interest given the recent unpleasantness with Helaine Olen and Ivan Tribble. This is a lunchtime session, and it might be a good opportunity to sneak in some beer. 1:30pm-2:15pm: This is the second break-out session. No question, the one I'll be attending is "How to Get Naked", because the incomparable Heather Armstrong will be on the discussion panel. Plus, this track goes right to the heart of what I want to learn. (It's not actually about nakedness: it's about putting your private life on display.) The other tracks are: doing business from your blog, legal tips regarding blogging, teen blogging, and a discussion about "women blogging" (I'm a little vague on what that's going to cover). 2:15pm-2:30pm: Pee break. 2:30pm-3:15pm: This is the third break-out session. I think I'll be going to "Suffragette Journalists: Op-Ed Pages of Our Own", discussing citizen journalism by and for women. The other sessions are global (geopolitical?) blogging, blogging for business, blogs in academia, and moblogging. 3:15pm-3:30pm: Beer break. I wish. 3:30pm-4:30pm: This is the fourth and final break-out session. I might just have to attend the "Mommy Blogging" session, even though I'm not a mommy. I'm hoping there'll be some discussion on the psychology of personal and family blogging; hopefully it won't just be a parenting workshop. The other tracks are: audio-video casting, monetizing your blog, African-American and Latin-American blogging, and blog syndication. 4:30pm-4:45pm: Cookie break. No, really, that's what the official agenda says. 4:45pm-5:45pm: Closing session: a discussion on accomplishments from the conference, and goals for next year. I need to sit near the back so I can be first in line for cocktails afterwards. 5:45pm-7:00pm: Cocktail party. Whoo hoo! 7:00pm-2:00am: Now, the serious drinking begins. 2:00am-5:00am: If I remember anything that happens during this period of time, the conference will have been a bust. I can't wait. |
