Movies: The League of Extraordinary [Bad Movies]
Friday, 2004 November 19 - 11:07 pm
This week I spent a lot of time lying on the couch watching movies on cable. There was a lot of nausea and coughed-up mucus, and not all of that was attributable to the flu.

Making the top of the "why did they bother" list this week is "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". This movie was a pointless collection of special effects and action sequences, with some hammy acting thrown in. Were it not for "The Avengers", I'd say this was one of Sean Connery's worst roles ever.

Next is the much-hyped and often-praised "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". This wasn't a bad movie, but I can't really say it was a good movie either. I kept expecting some sort of interesting story twist, but in the end it felt like a watered-down "Mutiny on the Bounty". One thing kept distracting me, too: I kept thinking that Dr. Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany) was actually a product of the schizophrenic imagination of Capt. Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe).

Jack Black's "School of Rock" was at least entertaining, if somewhat formulaic. It's Jack himself that makes the movie; without him, it's just another kids-defying-convention-and-overcoming-odds thing, complete with antagonist-who-ends-up-learning-something characters.

"The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" rating: 1 / 5
"Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" rating: 2.5 / 5
"School of Rock" rating: 2.5 / 5

I thought School of Rock rawked!

But I saw it at the hardcore theater where I smuggeld in a flask of scotch. It made it more interesting.
