The Simpsons Movie; Superbad; Balls of Fury | Tuesday, 2007 September 4 - 10:18 pm |
Quick reviews of the goofy fun movies of the summer. The Simpsons Movie. The good: "Spider Pig" is maybe the funniest scene of the summer; movie is more than just an extended TV episode. The bad: movie drags sometimes. Verdict: 3.0 / 5 Superbad. The good: Laugh-out-loud funny throughout; "McLovin'" gag is terrific; the best raunch comedy since "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". The bad: somewhat formulaic; secondary characters are meh. Verdict: 3.5 / 5 Balls of Fury. The good: Christopher Walken is in it; subtle parodies of many movies including "Enter the Dragon" and "Bloodsport" (and it's hard to beat Jason Scott Lee complaining about gweilo learning ping pong); Michelle Q. The bad: gags are somewhat obvious and overextended; plot is a self-parody. Verdict: 2.5 / 5 |
