Blog Note: The Big Move | Monday, 2005 February 21 - 9:51 pm |
Over the next few months (or years), this site will be moving. As I mentioned before, I bought a web hosting account on GoDaddy.com. I also purchased the domain "realkato.com", and I'll eventually be moving this site over there. Don't bother to go there now; nothing's really working yet. My strategy will be to move the site over in four phases. In the first phase, I'll duplicate all the content between this current location (on mac.com) and the new site. Hopefully I'll be able to accomplish that in a week or two. In the second phase, I'll change all the pages on mac.com to redirect to their corresponding pages on realkato.com. In the third phase, I'll drop Haloscan as my commenting system, and I'll install my own database. (I might also try to replace iBlog with my own program, but I haven't decided completely on that yet.) In the final phase, once I'm convinced that no one is visiting the old site, I'll get rid of it. That end point might be a really long time from now, so don't worry about updating your bookmarks and links just yet. I'll also be making some realkato.com e-mail addresses available. I don't think they'll be quite as popular as those gmail addresses. But they'll certainly be rare! I do have a few complaints about GoDaddy.com, now that I've had the chance to play with it a bit. First, there's no WebDAV access, so I have to use FTP to upload all my content. (And the built-in Mac OS X FTP client doesn't let me mount an FTP site as a writable volume.) Second, they don't let me use .htaccess to make password-protected areas. Third, they redirect "realkato.com/icons" to their OWN icon directory, so I had to rename my icons directory to something else and change all my links. So it's not perfect. But it's cheap, and I think it'll do the job for now. Please pardon the dust until everything gets moved over, and as always, let me know if you encounter any problems. |
