Blog Note: Hey Now, You're A Blog Star
Monday, 2005 March 7 - 10:48 pm
Just how does one become a famous blogger?

So it's happening again. I got a link from Suburban Bliss*, and I'm getting a spike in traffic. Melissa, YOU ROCK SO HARD. All this because I bought one of her t-shirts and I put up a goofy picture of myself wearing it. It's kind of like being on television by standing outside the window of The Today Show.

I'm trying to figure out just how people become famous by blogging. Sometimes people get fired for their blogs, like Dooce, Queen of Sky, Sarcastic Journalist, or Mark Jen. Then someone in the "mainstream" media writes an article about them, and poof, they become famous. I guess that's not so surprising; in our society we always seem to be astonished whenever something involving the computer actually has an impact on the "real world".

But I'm not sure how everyone else did it. I haven't been in the blogosphere long enough to know the whole history. How did Jason Kottke become so famous? Was he one of the first or something? What about Wonkette? I'm guessing she didn't take the same path as Washingtonienne.

And closer to home, how did Suburban Bliss get to be so popular? Is it simply because she's so good? I would love to believe that just having a lot of great content is the path to fame, and that it doesn't require notoriety or scandal to get there... unless the scandal involves me having sex with Rudi Bakhtiar or something.

And that leads me to my next theory, which is that if you get enough Google hits, you'll become famous someday. I'm sure the terms "sex" and "Rudi Bakhtiar" will draw some traffic here. Heck, I get hits for stuff like "urinal cake porn." (I'm not making that up, and yes, I said EWWW too.) So Miss Rudi ought to be good for at least a few page loads. I don't know how much she would like being mentioned in the same paragraph as "urinal cake porn", though.

At any rate: I think that all you famous bloggers are richly deserving of your popularity, and that all you not-so-famous bloggers will someday get the recognition you deserve too. You folks out there entertain me more on a daily basis than television, print, and the rest of the Internet combined. So thanks out there, and keep on writing.

*Don't go to suburbanbliss.net. Someone else bought the domain and Melissa no longer writes there.

Let's see, how did I find you. It boils down to that I live in Raleigh and have a job where I need to kills lots of time. A Google search of mulch and Raleigh led me to Little White Bungalow http://emsblog.typepad.com/ems_blog/ Which is actually someone who lives in Durham. She had suburbanbliss listed, which I like for its raw parenting experience. I found you via Suburbanbliss, plus you live in Cary (close enough, I work in Cary) and are of similar age. Other Raleigh blogs I read are,

http://marshallbrain.blogspot.com/
http://www.trixieupdate.com/
http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/carolgard/ actually a forum.

PS: I have no affiliation with these websites.
