CFB 2024: Week 7 and 8
Friday, 2024 October 25 - 6:40 pm
I swore I'd written a post last week after Michigan's bye, but I must have forgotten. I confess I'm losing enthusiasm for this season anyway.

Michigan 7, Illinois 21
What a strange and terrible game this was. Michigan actually outgained Illinois in this game, but three crushing turnovers, combined with a successful fake punt by Illinois, were enough to turn this game into a rout. Michigan seemed determined to prove they could pass the ball, but they... could not. Sure, Jack Tuttle's numbers didn't seem too bad (20 of 32 for 208 yards, with one interception) but he was frequently yards off on accuracy and seconds late on decision-making. Meanwhile Kalel Mullings had 87 yards on 19 carries and you have to wonder why Michigan didn't feed him the ball more.

The turnovers, though. Jack Tuttle threw his interception right into the chest of the defender after failing to read the zone drop. He had an awful fumble on a QB run play because he didn't protect the ball correctly. And Donovan Edwards fumbled to kill a promising looking drive.

At this point, I dunno, man. This looks like a lost season. Michigan's QB situation is dire. The offensive line is one of the worst in the conference. The receivers can't get open. Michigan's defense is playing hard but they keep being put into bad field position by the inept offense. Michigan will struggle to even reach bowl eligibility. I think the coaching staff is going to have to strike it rich in the transfer portal over the off-season if they want to retain their jobs. Michigan fans and alumni won't tolerate more than a couple of seasons of this level of performance.

Michigan vs. Michigan State, 7:30 PM BTN
This at least looks like a winnable game on paper, with MSU having the same 4-3 record as Michigan. On the other hand, two of MSU's losses came to Oregon and OSU, and they're fresh off a win over a pretty tough Iowa team. So this won't be an easy game by any means. I don't even really need to evaluate MSU to know that Michigan's fate rests on its ability to find some semblance of offense. Who's gonna be QB this week? We don't know... I thought Tuttle might at least look like a Division-1 quarterback, but he doesn't seem like much of an upgrade over Davis Warren. Orji is not the answer unless we can install an Army-style triple-option offense or something. Maybe it's time to let freshman Jadyn Davis have a go; at this point he's the QB of the future, so even if he's not completely ready, we might want to start looking to give him some experience for next season.

And maybe we'll ride Kalel Mullings like we should this time. Heck, let Mullings play QB... it can't get much worse.

Prediction: Michigan 21, MSU 20.

Notable Results
So many! Over the last two weeks! I'm too tired to post about them all. In week 7, lots of top teams narrowly avoided upsets. In week 8, Georgia knocked off Texas, and Tennessee beat Alabama. Is anyone actually any good? Maybe Indiana (7-0) will win it all.
