The Ring That Was Lost
Wednesday, 2005 October 12 - 8:10 am
My precioussssss.

So, I have this ring that Jen gave me over ten years ago:

She gave it to me in Cozumel, during a port stop on a cruise. It's one of my most treasured possessions, and I wear it almost all the time.

But I have a bad habit of taking the ring off and forgetting where I've put it. Usually I put it in a jeans pocket (you know, that little fifth pocket) and then the jeans go through the wash, and the ring ends up at the bottom of the washer or the dryer. But sometimes I leave it next to a sink, in the glove compartment of my car, or any of a hundred other places. It's a durable and well-traveled little thing.

A few years ago, I thought I'd lost the ring. I searched frantically for it for days, and couldn't find it. I chalked it up to fate, a sign that I needed to quit hanging on to memories of the past. And I almost moved on. But when the ring turned up months later (in the pocket of an old pair of jeans that I'd stopped wearing), I was jumping with joy.

The other day I misplaced the ring again, and while I did my best not to seem frantic about it in front of Amy, the thought of the ring being lost was stuck in the back of my mind all weekend. And yeah, of course the ring turned up a few days later in a jeans pocket... I felt a little sheepish after discovering that.

Nonetheless, the Ring That Was Lost is found again. I'm feeling a mix of relief and joy. Whew.

Yay! I'm glad that it isn't lost. I still have the earrings that I bought on that trip, as well as the shiny stretchy bracelets that you gave me over the years, and the ring, too. That's not holding onto memories of the past, that's simple nostalgia-building! Very important to me. If we don't appreciate those things, who will?
