Costa Rica Trip, Day 5
Saturday, 2005 December 3 - 3:15 pm
The day of the wedding.

Friday, November 25

In the morning, I don't have any tours, for once, but I'm still up at 7:00 AM. After breakfast, I take a walk into the town of Jacó. I'm able to get money from an ATM, and I'm able to buy nail clippers. (I desperately needed nail clippers. The hotel had a spa where I could have gotten a manicure, but I though a $15 manicure was kind of overkill when all I needed was a $2 pair of clippers.) Of course I didn't know what nail clippers were called in Spanish, and the guy at the farmacia didn't speak English, so I had to make the international gesture for nail clipping. Now I know, though: cortar uñas.

During my walk, I accidentally wander into a hardware store. One of the store clerks asks me something in Spanish; I don't understand, so I say "no hablo español" and abruptly turn around and leave. That must have been weird for the clerk. I mean, imagine a Mexican guy walking into your local Ace hardware store, announcing "I DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH", and then just walking out.

Back at the hotel, I'm suddenly a very popular guy, because the hotel does not have irons in the rooms, and I'm the only person who brought along a travel iron. People start to call me "the guy with the iron". My attempts to have people call me "Iron Man" are not successful.

The wedding is at 5:00, and it's beautiful. There's a sunset in the background, everyone looks great, and some tears are shed. I would have taken pictures of the ceremony, but since I was in the wedding, that probably would have been a faux pas.

Here's me in front of the sunset:

Note that I'm wearing a red shirt to match the bridesmaids' dresses... since I'm actually on Anna's side of the wedding. I'm a bridesman.

I have to show you Anna's dress, because I think it's hot, and because it was my wedding present to her:

It's a Monique Lhuillier. I wanted to get it for Anna because I knew having a great dress was important to her, and well, because she's my best friend. (You may recall that I went wedding dress shopping with Anna back in February. This dress was the result.)

The reception is fun: dinner, drinking, dancing, the usual wedding kind of stuff. The food is great. There are some beautiful speeches. Liquor is flowing freely. Uncle Mort takes his shirt off at one point. I dust off my creaky ballroom dance moves with Tonya. We send Anna and Erik off with sparklers... and soon afterwards, it's time to go back to the hotel and go to bed.

You bought her a Monique Lhuillier?! Allow me to exercize my sweet español skillz with a resounding ay caramba! You definitely deserve Bridesman of Honor for that. And maybe you should have gotten a crown, too. The dress is incredibly hot and she looks fabulous in it. Congratulations all around.

I love what Anna did with the wedding. It looks classy yet casual. Certainly not stuffy and boring and long. (I think I'll hire her when that day arrives for me.)

Monocerdo, both Anna and Ken have "thee" best taste. I don't think Ken would have let Anna get anything less. (Although really, she could look good in sweat pants and a stained T-shirt on four hours of sleep.)

Did you make a toast? Did anyone?

Very, very, very jealous of your Costa Rica trip. Very, very, very jealous of Anna's wedding dress. Both good choices for a wedding.
