Whatever Happened to the Dirt Pile?
Thursday, 2007 November 15 - 8:05 pm
The important thing is, it's gone.

First of all, please welcome a dear old friend of mine to my link bar. You may remember Noelle from such comments as "that kind of emotional over-stimulation can't be healthy" and "I'm perplexed by this C-string". Noelle is a friend from high school. We saw "Rain Man" together, then went to eat at Denny's afterwards. Also, she cried on my shoulder while I was wearing an ugly jacket and she had her fight with her crazy boyfriend Carl. Those are my two favorite Noelle memories.

Also welcome another high school friend to my link bar, Betsy. Betsy has never commented on my blog, and in fact has probably never read my blog. But thanks to Noelle, I am now reading hers. I haven't spoken to Betsy since, um... her twin sister's wedding? It's been a really long time.

Anywho, Noelle recently asked about the dirt pile. Remember the dirt pile? I never did post a proper picture of it. Here's the only photographic evidence of the dirt pile's existence:

You kinda can't see it behind the contractor trailer, so here's the x-ray enhanced version.

I finally did manage to get rid of the dirt pile. It wasn't via shoveling... though now I'm thinking, maybe I could have shoveled the dirt pile after all. My initial estimate of the weight of the pile (42.5 metric tons) couldn't have been right. A cubic foot of dirt doesn't weigh 100 pounds. It weighs maybe 20 or 25 pounds. So the pile was probably a mere 10 tons. Nothing!

I ended up hiring a guy with a Bobcat front-end loader to take down the pile. You might see the remnants of the pile as a ridge of dirt in this photo:

The backhoe also somehow transformed the trailer into a basketball hoop. Magic!

The net lesson I gained from this story is: I NEED TO OWN A BOBCAT. It looked like so much fun to operate... and people will pay you to do it. Screw this engineering crap... I wanna move dirt from Here to There.

Ken, thank you, I'm honored! I don't remember that party but I DO remember that ugly jacket. I understand that Carl now teaches college math, I think I might be able to find a link to him... If she sees this: HI BETSY!!! Email me please! We live 2 miles from each other in Pittsburgh - you in Edgewood and me in Swissvale, I work at the same university where your husband teaches. SMALL WORLD! (thanks for the info Amy)
