The Carpet Problem
Tuesday, 2005 March 15 - 11:30 pm
One of my happiest moments in the last year was the time I spent ripping the carpet out of the first floor of my house.

I have discovered, over the years, that there are many things that are incompatible with a light-gray carpet:

- Beer
- Iodine
- Orange juice
- Toilet bowl cleaning solution
- Soldering irons
- Hair coloring dye
- Red wine
- Orangutans
- North Carolina red clay
- Coca-Cola
- Spaghetti sauce
- Fire
- Gene Simmons

The guy who built my house had the master bathroom carpeted. Maybe he just wanted to give mildew a comfortable place to grow, I don't know.

I guess I wouldn't mind carpet so much if it weren't on the floor, where stuff can get on it all the time. Whose brilliant idea was it to put it there, anyway?

I never can understand carpet in a bathroom. People must like a nice cozy floor under their bare feet. But it would just get so moldy. We have tile floored bathrooms, they rarely get cleaned.

We have hardwood floors in our kitchen, and I hate it. We have spilled all sorts of oily things on it and it is getting sort of nasty. People love hardwood floors and think I'm crazy when I say I wish I had vinyl in the kitchen. But it is hard to keep the wood floors clean. There is a small amount of water damage from the old leaky dishwasher.

I hate hate hate hardwood floors. I have no idea why people would want them. I'm with you, Nicholas. What a pain to clean! I wish I could have carpet in my kitchen (I have vinyl). Maybe I'll try astroturf.

We have hardwood floors. And we like them just fine.

I swoon for the hardwood floors, but I've been known to cry actual tears of frustration while performing the Swiffering/sweeping/mopping combo it takes to clean them, so perhaps our current carpeted situation is a healthy floor covering switch for me. Still, my heart is with the hardwood, and if I were the first owner of a home I would NOT install carpeting (sorry, trees, nothing personal).

I installed natural cork flooring in my living room, and I love it. It has a urethane coat so it resists liquid spills. It's soooo easy to clean. I knocked over bottle of beer on it, and it cleaned up with no problem.

With my old carpet, any spill was basically an instant permanent stain. It was very irritating.

And anyway, I love Swiffering! It's instant gratification!
