Just What We Need, More Britney
Tuesday, 2005 April 5 - 11:47 pm
Britney Spears has signed up with UPN to do a reality TV show based on her engagement and marriage.

I find Britney Spears interesting.

It's become so fashionable to despise her, that liking her has actually become cool again. It's counter-counter-culture.

Say what you want about Britney, but you can't deny her role as a genre-defining influence in pop music. She sparked the 90s teen-girl phenomenon, paving the way for the likes of Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Kelly Clarkson, and JoJo. Who can forget the video for "Baby One More Time"? It was inspired. Really. That video will go down in history.

Is Britney vapid and vacuous? Surely. If you saw her in "Fahrenheit 9/11", you've seen the peak of her idiocy. But she's undeniably talented at what she does... and it's not singing. It's popular marketing. If you give any credit to the pre-molestation Michael Jackson, or to the pre-sex-fetish Madonna, you have to give credit to Britney too. She's got the same sort of ability to appeal to the masses.

Now she's going to have a reality TV show. It's a wee bit derivative of Jessica Simpson's TV show... that's an odd turn of events, I'd say. I don't know if the show will do very well. I'll probably never watch it myself. But I won't begrudge her any bit of success.

Of course, I won't mind a bit if she shows up wearing a skin-tight red latex suit.

Sing it, Britney.

I didn't want to rain on Britney's parade, but Fox has approached me to do a reality series of me cleaning my apartment. It will run for five weeks - one episode for each room, and then the finale - where I brush my cats and change the litter box.

I'm getting breast implants before they start filming. But if anyone asks, they're real.

Crouching Hamster, I can't wait to see if you use flushable litter or "the other kind."

Frankly, I'll probably be too busy watching Pam Anderson in Stacked to catch up with Britney.
Maybe they should just go for broke and make a reality show with Britney, Christina, Jessica and Ashlee. I already have a title they could use, "BitchSlap" (not that I think any of them are b's, but that's probably what it would devolve to in every episode). Or maybe "The Real World...of Spoiled Starlets Who Have Far Too Much Money, Power and Fame for There Own or Anybody Else's Good and I Wish They'd All Just Leave the Rest of Us Alone for a Little While." Is that too long for a t-shirt?
