I have a bunch of mini-topics to cover today. Hurricane season is starting here, and the forecast is for an "above average" season. The prediction is for thirteen named storms with seven hurricanes, three of them being major. Now, the thing is, we've been "above average" for eight of the last ten years. Don't you think maybe they should CHANGE the average? Newsweek has retracted its story about interrogators at Guantanamo desecrating the Koran as a form of psychological manipulation. Apparently their source never had a first-hand account that this happened. I'd say that's a pretty big OOPS, considering that fifteen people DIED as a result of violent protests. I'm thinking, that's gotta be a career-limiting move for a few folks at Newsweek. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if the story were actually true... but even if I were a hundred percent sure of that, I'd still think twice before publishing it. Wal-Mart has apologized for an ad that compares local governments' efforts to keep their stores from opening to a Nazi book-burning. The ad read, "Should we let government tell us what we can read? Of course not... So why should we allow local government to limit where we shop?" Right... because preventing a carnivorous giant from keeping wages down and running off smaller businesses is SO like burning books. No doubt there would be less objection if Jon Stewart's America (The Book) were being burned. Kansas' school board is debating the definition of science itself. Certain people want to change it from its current definition, "a human activity of systematically seeking natural explanations for what we observe in the world around us." I believe the new proposed definition is, "rejecting every answer until we come up with something that reflects what we've already decided to be true." |

That Newsweek thing really upset me. It's like no one cares about the consequences of their actions anymore. Walmart is SO hypocritcal! THEY are the ones who want to limit shopping choices by running everyone else out of business. |
