Suburban Bliss Readers Click Here
Thursday, 2005 February 10 - 11:40 pm
HOLY CRAP, Melissa gets a lot of traffic. Well, compared to me, anyway. But now everyone is getting re-routed here!

So you know, I was trying to be helpful and all, posting my little comment and trackback on Suburban Bliss*. Maybe I got more than I bargained for.

Apparently some anonymous commenter "L" has been leaving unkind comments over there, and Melissa's just about had enough. So at the end of her last article, Melissa turns off her own comment link, and writes: "Hey, go read Real Kato Online for good times and I'll bet he won't mind if you tell him the answers to his dreams are in Canton Michigan."

Um. I think she was trying to do me a favor by sending traffic here, but I've been to Canton several times and I didn't really find the answers to my dreams there. So, no need to tell me about it. I hear the streets of Royal Oak are paved with gold, though.

Before today, I would average about 25 page loads per day from my little community of readers. Over the last half hour, I've had over a hundred, from all over the freakin' world. People are probably wondering, "Why on earth is Melissa telling people to go to THIS site?" I suppose I asked for it. If you were expecting to find something INTERESTING, I apologize; it's mostly just pointless crap over here.

Here's a thing about blogs, folks: we don't write them because we want criticism. We are not journalists and we are not here to debate. We do this to vent our feelings and to connect with people. We don't want trolls on our sites, PARTICULARLY when we are emotionally vulnerable and in need of support. You trolls out there, you're like the school bullies who tormented us when we had pimples on picture day. We just DON'T NEED IT, you know?

Those of you who are fans and friends of Melissa... I'm sure she appreciates your support. Really. But she's probably had her fill of advice, so ease up on her, OK? She's doing all she can. Tell her you love her, tell her she's wonderful, and send her Nyquil and Bloody Marys. But don't tell her how to do things; I'm sure she's already thought of just about everything. I've had several friends who have been jobless (right, Crouching Hamster?) and they'll tell you: you can do everything right and still not have a job. It's just not that easy, and if you haven't been there, you don't know.

One thing you might do to help her just a little: buy a text ad on her site like I did. It's only $15 for a week, and if a few hundred people do it, it might just be enough to fix her sewage pipes.

Melissa: again, good luck and best wishes to you and your family.

*Don't go to suburbanbliss.net. Someone else bought the domain and Melissa no longer writes there.

I can't believe you've had all this traffic and no comments ... so I'll start. I think what you've done for Melissa is great (intelligent advice too). If I wasn't unemployed and broke, I'd put my money where my mouth is as well.

Gestures like yours are what the positive side of blogging is all about.

Wishing you all the best.

Good for you.

Be it their bumper stickers or their blog comments, the nice thing about self-righteous pinheads is that they love to jump up and shout, "Hey! Here I am!" which makes them all the easier to dismiss.

Busy Mom - hello! I'm flattered to have such a famous and high profile visitor.

Zach - right on, man.

Ken's right. Advice doesn't do much except make one feel as if they are doing something wrong and need advice - from someone who has never been there! I've heard it all, from printing your resume on lavender paper, to setting up "informational interviews," to "just being positive!"

A pat on the back, a cup of coffee, and yes, $15, can go a LONG way.

And Melissa, if you're still reading, just don't give up. And on those days when you feel like you might,
it's OK. You can feel that way. Friends, family and fellow bloggers will carry the load for you on those days.
