Television: Idol Update, Week 12
Wednesday, 2006 May 10 - 9:45 am
It's Elvis night, and everyone except Taylor blows it.

Taylor Hicks: 8/10 and 10/10. Overall=8.3.
"Jailhouse Rock". This is his usual style. It's fun, but a little karaoke-ish again, and the tone isn't great. But his version of "In the Ghetto" is very original, stylized, and fantastic. That performance is the clear winner tonight.

Chris Daughtry: 6/10 and 7/10. Overall=7.4.
"Suspicious Minds" should have been great for him, but it turns out to be just a safe performance. The outfit is terrible. He's a little pitchy in parts, and doesn't really bring it home. "A Little Less Conversation" could have been a winner too, but the whole low part is pretty understated and not very interesting. The finish is good, but that might not be enough.

Katharine McPhee: 6/10 and 7/10. Overall=7.3.
"Hound Dog/All Shook Up" has just too much dancing; it's wild and all over the place. She gets out of breath, forgets a lyric, and the whole thing ends up like karaoke at a country bar. Simon says it was "manic". When she goes back to doing ballads with "Can't Help Falling in Love", she has a bad first note and a bad last note. The middle is okay, but she might be oversinging a little.

Elliott Yamin: 6/10 and 7/10. Overall=6.3.
"I Can Dream". Gawd, look at that opening pose: can this guy get any cheesier? The beginning is awful, but it improves through the middle. Parts of it are shouty and too breathy... and someone needs to teach him to drop his jaw when he sings "ooo" so his face doesn't scrunch up, and so he gets more depth. In "Trouble", there's some weird notes in there but he loses some of his cheesiness, which is good. But he just doesn't have the right attitude and growliness for this song.

Ah, yes. Not to mention little girls. My seven and ten year olds were literally yelling at the TV screen.

Is this thing rigged?
