Dating Update
Monday, 2005 February 28 - 10:20 pm
So far, the results are not so good.

So as I explained before, I'm out doing the on-line dating thing, on the site that rhymes with Scratch Hot Palm.

I have 177 "mutual matches". That's the number of women who meet all my criteria, and for whom I also meet their criteria. I think I would have more matches if I lied about my height, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I'm 5'8" and that seems to be below the line for a lot of women. I can understand if a woman is 5'10" and doesn't want to date someone shorter than she is, but what's the deal with women who are 5'0" and need a guy who's 6'0" or taller? There must be some sort of insecurity at work there.

(For those of you outside the U.S.: 5'8"=173cm, 5'10"=177cm, 5'0"=152cm, 6'0"=183cm.)

Of my 177 matches, I found 21 interesting enough to bookmark. Of those 21, I've emailed 6. That means I'm only interested in emailing 3 percent of the women that Scratch Hot Palm suggests for me. A lot of the women appear to be exaggerating about their own physical traits. Look, I really don't mind if you're a little overweight, but please just be honest. If you're 5'2" and you weigh 200 pounds, that's no longer in the "average" category. (5'2"=157cm, 200lb=91kg). It's not like I'm not going to figure it out once I see your picture. Oh, and speaking of pictures, there ought to be some rule requiring people to post pictures taken within the last three years. Maybe people should hold up newspapers, like kidnapping victims.

At this rate, it may take a long time before I actually meet someone. I've heard that women only respond to 5 to 10 percent of the men who write to them. I did get one response. I hope that doesn't mean I've used up my quota already.

This, by the way, is the reason I chose Scratch Hot Palm instead of the more esoteric Salon.com... given the low hit rates, there's something to be said for sheer volume.

Ah, but Salon's personals are linked to Nerve's which are linked to The Onion's etc. It's actually quite a large network. Just in case you care.

Good luck!

Thanks, Mary.

Yeah, I know, Salon and Nerve and The Onion and a few other sites are all the same network. But last time I checked, Scratch Hot Palm was still about ten times bigger.

It is. The max I've ever seen on the Spring Street Network (salon, nerve, etc.) is 3200.

But it's also self-selecting. So it minimizes the boring and mundane. And increases the number of players.
