Remembering Reagan | Thursday, 2004 June 10 - 1:06 am |
With Reagan's passing this week, it seems the media and the public are remembering his Presidency with rose-colored glasses. Is this just respect for the dead, or have we really forgotten? Now, I'll grant you, Ronald Reagan was by far a better President than either of the Bush boys. But I'm getting a bit peeved over how Reagan is getting mentioned in the same breath as Lincoln, and how folks are looking back on that time as some sort of golden age. Apparently, Reagan is being given credit for lifting the U.S. out of recession and Jimmy Carter's "malaise". But oh yeah, he did it by mortgaging away our future with massive budget deficits. You know, if I went into debt for billions of dollars, I could live pretty large for a while too. Reagan is being given credit for transforming the Republican party and championing the idea of smaller government. But oh yeah, government spending grew under Reagan's watch. Reagan is being given credit for ending the Cold War. But oh yeah, this was mostly due to a visionary and concessionary leader on the other side of the fence. Reagan's contribution was a hard line against the "evil empire" and a massive military buildup. Hey, I think Kruschev tried that strategy, too. I remember worrying about nuclear war. I remember the Iran-Contra scandal. I remember wondering if Nancy Reagan was really in charge of the White House. I remember people caring more about money than clean air. I don't pass judgment on Reagan personally. By all accounts, he was a likable guy, and sincere. But let's not use his death to sugar-coat his politics. |
