Triangle Area Voter Guide 2006, Part 4: Johnston County Races
Monday, 2006 November 6 - 1:05 pm
Tomorrow is election day! Here are my endorsements for Johnston County local elections.

My endorsements are in boldface. See Part 1 for statewide and U.S. Congressional Races.

N.C. Senate

N.C. Senate District 12
(D) Sherry Altman
(R) Fred J. Smith Jr.
Altman supports universal health care coverage and green technologies. Smith is anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage. This is an easy choice.

N.C House

N.C. House District 26
(R) N. Leo Daughtry

N.C. House District 28
(R) James H. Langdon Jr.

Johnston County Courts

Superior Court Judge District 11B
Tom Lock
Jackie Lee
Not sure here. Jackie Lee is a little too proud of her conservative credentials, but Tom Lock has been a career prosecutor and I'm not sure how much he'd stand up for defendants' rights. I guess I'd lean towards Lock because he's a Democrat.

District Court Judge District 11
Albert A. "Andy" Corbett, Jr.

District Court Judge District 11
Addie Rawls

District Attorney District 11
(R) Susan Doyle
(D) Dale Stubbs
Close one here. Both are well-qualified, and they have similar positions. I lean towards Stubbs because he's more experienced and because he's a Democrat, but it'd be interesting to put a woman into office here.

Other Johnston County Elections

Johnston County Clerk of Superior Court
(D) Will Crocker
(R) James R. Gerrell

Johnston County Register of Deeds
(R) Craig Olive

Johnston County Sheriff
(R) Steve Bizzell
(D) Jerry D. Holloman
Vizzle the Bizzell, fo shizzle.

Johnston County Commissioner District 3
(D) C.P. Thompson Jr.
(R) Wade Stewart
There's something odd about a Democrat who lists Jesse Helms as a political hero.

Johnston County Commissioner District 5
(R) Cookie Pope

Johnston County Commissioner District 7
(R) Allen Mims

Johnston County Board of Education
Carol Brannock
Brian Keith Hale
Butler Hall
Sylvia Williams Herring
Dorothy G. Johnson
Larry Strickland
I support BoE members who are teachers.

Johnston County Soil and Water District Supervisor
Irving K. Pittman
There are two spots open but only one candidate on the ballot. I'll vote for Amy on this one.

Clayton Districting Referendum
YES.
Currently all Clayton council members are white. Part of the idea of this referendum is that minority interests could be represented on the council if there was a West/South district with its own candidate. The arguments against the idea seem week. This referendum is non-binding, but I'd vote yes.
