The Michigan Weekend: Part 7 (Conclusion)
Tuesday, 2005 May 10 - 3:09 pm
... in which I talk about the surprises waiting for me at home.

Monday, 6:45 p.m. - Surprise #1

I walk in the front door of my house, and I notice immediately that there's an odd smell. What IS that? It's not a bad smell; the first thing that comes to mind was that it smells like apples, but that makes no sense at all. I chalk it up to the fact that the house had been closed up for a few days, and whatever minor smells that may have been present before I left have just become more concentrated.

Then, I notice that there's a stack of items by the door. I remember all those items: telephone books, a spool with an extension cord, a golf towel... but I didn't stack them like that, did I? It was very early in the morning when I left on Saturday, so maybe I did... but, HUH. This is getting to be a bit Twilight-Zone-like. The song lyric running through my head is, "the thing that bothers me is, someone keeps moving my chair..."

But I must be imagining things. It's been a long trip and I'm tired. I'm going to the kitchen for a glass of orange juice, and HEY, THE TABLE IS IN A DIFFERENT PLACE. This one, I'm sure of. I didn't do that. Someone has been in here.

It finally dawns on me: someone had come in to FINISH PAINTING MY KITCHEN. And that someone was my best friend Anna, and her lovely fiancé Erik. And I laugh because only in Cary, North Carolina, would someone break into your house just to paint it.

I have the greatest friends in the whole world. This was an instant reminder that as much as I loved seeing all my old Michigan friends, my North Carolina friends are pretty darn special in their own right.

Monday, 7:45 p.m. - Surprise #2

I've got a comment from Javi. He's given me a great plug on his LiveJournal, so now I've got a whole new group of readers to entertain.

Monday, 7:50 p.m. - Surprise #3

I've got a new entry in my guestbook, from Melinda. This pleases me immensely, because my guestbook was starting to become very lonely.

Monday, 7:55 p.m. - Surprise #4

A girl from the on-line dating service has written me back, with a thoughtful and lengthy response. She's cute and smart and interesting, and I've already got enough information to stalk her on Google. Her nickname will be "GunGirl".

Monday, 8:00 p.m. - Surprise #5

My beautiful friend "Lily" (not her real name) wrote to me to say hello, and it might not be long before I see her. Yay!

Monday, 10:15 p.m. - Bonus Surprise

My ex-girlfriend "Connie" (not her real name) called me to say hello and to catch up. What is it about this weekend? Is there some confluence of cosmic forces aligning to bring me together with all of my friends?

---

I'm happy right now. I feel like Jimmy Stewart at the end of "It's a Wonderful Life". I'm going to try to hang on to this feeling, and remember it whenever there are darker days.

That's the end of the weekend wrapup. I'll try to return to my usual blogging routine tomorrow. Thanks for indulging me.

Almost like being there:) Sounds like a great weekend. Makes my weekend at home cleaning seem positively boring. Wish I could get someone to break into my house and paint. You've got some good friends.

In Ann Arbor and you didn't call me? Jeez... I'm hurt and yet, I suppose I will get over it. Tell John that he can't have ALL of your time, there needs to be room for NEW friends, too. (JK)
Seriously, let me know when you're up here again.
We'll go somewhere other than Grizzly Peak. I have some ideas.... Perhaps some falafel at Jerusalem Garden? I know that place HAD to be there when you used to live here--that place is as old as my Gramma.

Yes, but do you really WANT this new group to entertain?
