Today's Frozen Meal: DiGiorno 200 Calorie Pepperoni (Pizza)
Friday, 2010 March 5 - 3:23 pm
"Pepperoni, mozzarella cheese & marinara sauce on a thin crust." It's pizza-like, but interestingly, the box doesn't have the word "pizza" anywhere on it. 200 calories per portion, but there are two portions in the box. Sneaky.

Box

Meal

So this is DiGiorno's attempt at making a healthier pizza (or pizza-like substance). They look like pizza Pop Tarts.

Taste: It's kind of pizza-like, but the rectangular shape crunchy texture kind of reminds me of the pizza I used to eat in school cafeterias. But there's a surprising amount of flavor to it, and the pastry-like crust actually works. The cheese is skimpy and there isn't much depth to it, but it's edible. Score: 3.0/5.0

Nutrition

Nutrition: Okay, there are two servings in the box, and one serving is waaaay to small to be a meal. So I ate them both, and that means all the nutrition numbers need to be doubled. Here's the result:
calories: 400
calories from fat: 160
fat:18 g
saturated fat:8 g
cholesterol:30 mg
sodium:1040 mg
carbohydrates:42 g
fiber:2 g
sugar:6 g
protein:20 g
vitamin A:12%
vitamin C:0%
calcium:20%
iron:20%
So despite DiGiorno's attempt to pass this off as a healthy alternative to their regular pizza, this is still a mess of fat and sodium. Sure, you could just eat one piece, but that's only 85 grams of food. That's a snack, not a meal.
Score: 0.5/3.0

Packaging: Cumbersome. Each portion comes in a shrink-wrap package and on its own crisping sheet, but you have to put that on a separate plate to cook. There are no instructions on how to cook both portions at one time. Score: 1.0/2.0

Total Score: 4.5/10.0. One of the poorest scoring meals yet.
