Poker? Why Thank You, I Will
Sunday, 2006 January 8 - 6:17 pm
I lost at cards AGAIN. Damn it.

Another poker tournament, another poor finish. And this time, I think I played exceptionally well. I mean, I made good reads the whole way, I never chased a bad hand, and I made the right bet just about every time. Of the hands that I bet, I won more than 80%. But because of the steep escalation in the bet amounts, it only takes one bad break late in the tournament to knock you out, even if you've been winning consistently otherwise. I had ace-queen against pocket tens, and the other guy drew another ten, and he took a large chunk of my chips. After that, despite winning another moderately-sized pot later, it was just a matter of time before I got blinded out.

I'm a little discouraged because really, playing well at poker doesn't seem to help you much, especially in the format we play. It's more about getting bare-ass lucky at just the right time. We might as well be having a keno tournament.

Fortunately, this time I have Amy as a consolation prize. She sent me an email saying "but you won ME", and that made everything better.

And by the way, I have a bar now. I could probably start hosting my OWN tournaments... with a betting structure more to my liking.
