Oooh, sparkly.

So first of all, I'm feeling much better now, thank you. But of course the bad news is, I'm gonna have to go back to work tomorrow. Sigh.

Today Amy and I went to a jewelry auction. There's a New Jersey-based company that handles auctioning estate pieces, items confiscated by police, and other items that people simply want sold off. They were in town this weekend. Since it's possible that I might need to make a significant jewelry purchase sometime in the near future, it seemed worthwhile to check this out.

While there were undoubtedly some good deals to be had, there wasn't anything that screamed BUY ME loud enough for me to plunk down a big wad of money. Some of the items (like a six-carat diamond solitaire ring) went for $30,000. There was an ruby jewelry set (bracelet, necklace, and earrings) that an elderly gentleman bought for his wife for $16,000. Some guy bought his teenage daughter a $14,000 Rolex watch. (WTF?)

Me, I spent $25 on the very first item up for auction: a loose 8-carat amethyst, which is my birthstone.

Granted, it's got a bunch of imperfections, and it's only a semi-precious stone... but considering other folks spent A THOUSAND TIMES more than I did, I think I got a relative bargain.

Now, Amy didn't go home with an engagement ring, but she said she was okay with that. For now.
