Bad News, Good News
Friday, 2006 April 14 - 12:47 pm
So you know what they say, bad things come in threes. Here's yesterday's collection.

1a. The bad news: Ross-Simons jewelers wrote to me that their database had been compromised and that personal information was accessed, including possibly my social security number. So now I'm more paranoid than ever about identity theft.

1b. The good news: It's free to put a fraud alert on your credit file. Also, I'm already subscribed to a credit monitoring service.

---

2a. The bad news: Amy saw a bunch of bugs crawling around near my front door. I thought they might be termites, because there wasn't any food around in that area, and termites have come in that way before. (I have a dirt-filled front porch. In termite terms, that's like leaving a pile of money and guns in your doorway while Republicans are swarming around outside.)

2b. The good news: I think they're actually ants. I captured a few for analysis, and they've got narrow abdomens and bent antennae. Very ant-like. And anyway, I have an annual termite service that includes insurance; if there's any damage, they'll fix it for free.

---

3a. The bad news: I did my taxes, and I owe the government. Again. That's mostly thanks to this stupid law.

3b. The good news: I guess I could look at it one of two ways. One is that I make enough money that the stupid law applies to me. The other is that by not overpaying taxes throughout the year and then getting a refund, I didn't give the government a free loan.

---

And of course, there's always this bit of good news: all this gives me good material for the blog.

Take one of the ant corpses to an exterminator. Could be caprenter ants.
