Getting free PR at the North Carolina Theater.

Last week Amy and I went to see the North Carolina Theater's production of "South Pacific" at Memorial Auditorium. I've had season tickets to the NCT for quite some time, and whenever I go, I sit next to a guy named Robbie. He's also a long-time season ticket holder, and for several years we've had a good laugh about how I bring a different date to the theater every time I go. (By my count, I've brought at least a dozen different women there over the years.)

Well, this time, we told Robbie that Amy would probably be showing up there a lot from now on, because we'd gotten engaged. So Robbie excitedly stood up an announced to our entire section, "KEN GOT ENGAGED!" And he explained to everyone the whole thing about all the different dates I've had, and how he always eagerly anticipated finding out who I was bringing next... so now a few hundred theater patrons know about our engagement, and the long road I've taken to get there.

Of course, now, it'll be funny if Amy can't make it to some show in the future, and I take one of my women friends along instead. I just can't imagine the level of ribbing I'm gonna have to take when THAT happens.

But I can't fault Robbie. He's a nice guy, and as it turns out, a pretty successful businessman who'd seems like a good guy to know. Heck, we might even invite him to the wedding.

Yesterday I spent most of the day with some of Amy's family; it was a Mother's day cookout. I was meeting some of the family for the first time. Everyone seemed nice, but I'm not sure they knew what to make of me. I didn't really talk all that much, and I probably seemed more like Amy's weird adopted cousin than her fiancé. I'm gonna have to work on figuring out a way to relate to everyone better.

Maybe I should just hire Robbie to come with me next time. He'd make sure everyone got to know me really well.

What a cool idea -- bringing your own PR person to events with you!

Callahan had a cartoon captioned "AA in LA". At the microphone -- a man says, "Hi, my name is Bill and I represent Chuck who's an alcoholic."
