Back from NYC
Monday, 2005 February 7 - 7:00 pm
Sorry for the brief hiatus, folks. I've just returned from New York.

I've experienced something that few men will ever experience: going wedding dress shopping with women. Now, most men would say they want no part of anything like that, but I'll tell you this: if the bride-to-be is one of your best friends, and you get to watch her face light up when she finds just the right dress for the most important day of her life, it's really something wonderful.

Anna (the bride-to-be) and I went up to New York; there we met up with her maid of honor Geovanna and a few other folks (including, of course, Crouching Hamster). On the first evening, we did waaaay more drinking than we should have, considering we were actually setting out to accomplish something. (I don't think drinking and carousing, by themselves, constitute an accomplishment.)

Weary and hung over on Friday morning, we took the subway to Bay Ridge in Brooklyn (which, if you're starting from Manhattan, is BFE: it's an hour-long subway ride.) But that turned out well because we did find just the right dress there. And so, mission accomplished, we could focus back on drinking and carousing.

I will spend this entire week detox-ing.

It was a good trip all in all. There were some moments of drama, which I won't get into. But mostly we had a monstrously good time.

Now that I'm back in Raleigh, I do notice how clean and spacious everything is here. I also notice how irritated I am about having to drive everywhere, and about the fact that I live in Chain Restaurant City. I guess every place has its ups and downs... what matters most, I think, is the people you're with.

There was DRAMA IN THE AIR in NYC this weekend (Ooo, my next song title). Everybody was feeling it. I think it was the winter thaw.
