End of Days?
Tuesday, 2005 October 11 - 8:29 am
The significance of the recent disasters.

So now we've got an earthquake in Pakistan that may have killed as many as 40,000 people. We've got a mudslide in Guatemala, as a result of hurricane Stan, that may have buried a village of 1400 people. After Katrina and Rita, some folks are beginning to wonder whether these are signs of the apocalypse. Apparently there was a whole discussion on CNN about it. No, really.

We really haven't progressed much in 2,000 years, have we? Attributing natural events to the wrath of Apollo and Poseidon God?

I look at apocalypse in a different way. The end of the world will come only if we destroy ourselves: if we continue to view war as a solution to political problems; if we become blind to the fact that our liberties are being eroded by our governments; if we let religious differences divide us as a country and as a planet; and if we fail to protect the underprivileged and disenfranchised peoples of the world.

In other words, the end of the world will come if we continue to put Republicans in office. That's the real disaster.

Here's something that did cause me worry... apparently, the Smurf village has been bombed.

I'll be starting a Smurf Relief Meme shortly.
