Two more people do the fashionable thing; and, Fantasia might be able to read after all. WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes publicly came out of the closet on Wednesday. Today, Star Trek actor George Takei (Lt. Sulu) did likewise. Sooooo, NTTAWTT, but you know Sheryl and George, we're not really all that surprised. Still, both Swoopes and Takei made headlines with their announcements. Why is that? Why is it such a big deal? These days, coming out as gay seems more like a publicity stunt than anything else. If you want to be really shocking, tell the world that you're illiterate. Illiterate is the new gay. Oh wait. Fantasia says she isn't illiterate after all, and that 20/20 twisted her words to be sensationalist. Hmmm. The odd thing is that the original story of her illiteracy made national top news headlines, but this followup is buried in a number of smaller publications. Seems like it's The Man at work again, trying to keep a sistah down. |
