BREAKING NEWS: Miers Withdraws
Thursday, 2005 October 27 - 9:14 am
Harriet Miers withdrew from her nomination to the Supreme Court today.

This just in... Harriet Miers has called it quits. Facing opposition from all sides, Miers withdrew from consideration for a seat on the Supreme Court.

Officially, the Bush administration says she objected to calls by the Judiciary Committee for documents that were protected by attorney-client privilege, and that that was the reason she withdrew. But more likely, it was widespread opposition by the conservative Christian right that caused her nomination to collapse. It's quite likely that Republican party leaders, fearing a revolt from their base in the 2006 elections, pressured Miers to drop out, or pressured Bush to withdraw her.

Wow. So who's next? Someone more conservative, who might trigger a Democratic filibuster? Or someone else who's ambiguously liberal, sparking more outrage in the Christian right wing? Seems like Bush is between a rock and hard place here.

He'll go more conservative. As a liberal, I was not mad about the Miers nomination. He could have picked someone a lot worse. Now I fear he will.
