Television: Idol Update, Week 2, Part 1
Thursday, 2006 March 2 - 9:01 am
Ranking the second week's performances. Part 1: The Women.

So, I've developed a weighted scoring average system, to give everyone a running score. It's a three-week moving average, with current weeks weighted higher than older weeks. Hey, I'm an engineer; this is what we do.

The women this week struggled mightily... no outstanding performances among them. The main problem: bad song choices.

THE WOMEN:

Mandisa: 8/10. Overall=7.6.
I'm really starting to like her. She sings Faith Hill; it doesn't do the song justice (Mandisa, honey, you are NOT a skinny white blonde), but it's not bad. A solid performance.

Kellie Pickler: 7/10. Overall=7.0.
Still adorable. It's a pretty safe song, and she still shows trouble getting power behind the low notes.

Kinnik Sky: 7/10. Overall=6.6.
Cute and fun performance; a step up from last week. Not a hard song, but a pretty good show.

Paris Bennett: 5/10. Overall=6.6
Oh no, you did not just sing "Wind Beneath My Wings", the most hacked-up karaoke song ever. It's like a talent show audition. Come on, Paris, we know you can do better.

Katharine McPhee: 6/10. Overall=6.4.
Hmm, is she pregnant or something? She doesn't look so good. It's not a bad performance, but frightfully dull.

Ayla Brown: 4/10. Overall=5.6.
Celine Dion? With the hoky arm movements and all, this seems like a church recital. Pitchy.

Melissa McGhee: 6/10. Overall=4.8.
Uh, please put that belly away, Melissa. This is very karaoke-ish; definitely the wrong song, but she's trying.

Lisa Tucker: 4/10. Overall=4.8.
Bad clothes, good eyebrows. This one is pitchy, and it's like a high school talent show song. Ugh.

Heather Cox: 4/10. Overall=2.8.
Snore. Pitchy, and a terrible song choice. Utterly forgettable.

Brenna Gethers: 2/10. Overall=2.0.
Pitchy and dull; a bad performance of what should be a good song. Why is she still here?

The bottom 3: Kinnik, Brenna, Heather. And... Brenna is at the BOTTOM, muwahahaha. And Heather is the second-lowest, going home to her goats.
