Stuff going on around here...

Everyone around here is talking about the Duke lacrosse team. Did a bunch of privileged white boys rape a black stripper? No one is quite sure yet. They do know that the Duke lacrosse team had a party that involved underage drinking, that they hired women from escort services to dance at the party, and that they yelled some racial slurs at the women on the night of the party. The odd thing is that this seems to have become more of a racial issue than a women's issue, at least for some people. I wonder if some women would be more involved if the stripper had been white and the athletes had been black; and I wonder if some black community leaders would be less involved if that were the case.

I also wonder if this would be generating more outrage if the woman had not been a stripper.

The North Carolina Education Lottery is here. In the first five days, the lottery took in $24 million in scratch-off ticket sales. PowerBall is set to start up here at the end of May. No more long trips to South Carolina for me. The last time I went to South Carolina to buy PowerBall tickets, I got stuck on I-40 because of an accident, and I had to sit parked in my car for two hours while they cleared it. It'll be a lot better now that I can just walk around the corner to the gas station.

Herb Sendek is leaving NC State. This will only be of interest to local folks, probably, but a lot of NC State basketball fans are relieved that beleaguered coach Herb Sendek is leaving to coach at Arizona State next fall. Sendek has long been roundly criticized for having an overly conservative approach to coaching, and for not taking advantage of the athletic talent of his players.

And also with the Duke thing, nobody is denying that the woman WAS raped, both vaginally and anally, if that's what they mean by "sodomy," as well as strangled. I'm a woman who knows that sexual violence is about VIOLENCE, and in this case, like most, I bet, it's about power. So there are a lot of issues tied up there. Racism, sexism, classism, durhamism... God this situation makes me more and more pissed every day.

Actually, the Lacrosse team's attorney is denying whether the dancer(s) was raped.

I do not live in the Raleigh/Durham area and feel "facts" should come forward before we make public judgements.

I know a few things:

1. At the party something happened
2. A coach resigned
3. Duke and Durham are getting publicity they do not want

If the Duke students with to expel the lacrosse players for failing to live up to the honor code (underaged drinking, failing to live a moral life, or poorly representing the "spirit" of the student body(hiring a stripper)), I do feel they have grounds.

As for suggested criminal act, why judge this quickly? We do have a system that will ensure all parties get heard.
