Terri's Law Struck Down | Sunday, 2004 September 26 - 11:14 am |
The Florida Supreme Court struck down "Terri's Law", the attempt by Florida Republicans to bypass the court system for a ruling they didn't like. "Terri's Law" was a law designed to give Florida Governor Jeb Bush the power to intervene in the case of Terri Schiavo, who is in a permanent vegetative state but artificially kept alive (against her own previously stated wishes and those of her husband). The law was wrong in so many ways: it was applied retroactively, it ceded legislative control from the Florida Legislature to the governor, it was an attempt to bypass the court system, and it was designed to apply only to one specific case. This is another case where I'm shocked at how Republicans seem to support government meddling into personal affairs. Republicans, how many of your tax dollars are being spent on this? To the Schiavo family, I'll say this: I sympathize with your pain. It's hard to let go. But the plain fact is, Terri is gone. I'm sure you'd like to interpret an involuntary muscle reaction as a smile, but you're living in a dream world. You can let go now and move on, as I'm sure Terri would have wanted you to, or you can torture yourselves for many more years with false hopes. |
