Supreme Court Cops Out | Monday, 2004 June 14 - 11:51 pm |
Oh, those crazy Supreme Court justices: they took the easy way out. Well, I guess we'll have a few more decades of forced indoctrination by the religious majority here. The Supreme Court ruled that Michael Newdow did not have the right to represent his 10-year-old daughter in the Pledge of Allegiance debate, thus avoiding making any kind of judgment about state-church separation or individual freedom. Then again, the Court justices are making odd statements that they would have voted in favor of retaining "under God" in the Pledge (perhaps they all want to be recused from the case next time around), so maybe it's just as well. If I have kids, I'll teach them to pledge allegiance to "one nation, under cod", to recognize the fact that the majority of patriotic Americans have eaten fish, throughout our long and glorious history. (It's just as legitimate as the argument that "under God" recognizes the "religious heritage" of the country.) I'll teach them that reciting the pledge is just like singing a song... just like you're not really row row rowing a boat, you're not really swearing allegiance to a piece of cloth, or a fish. I'll teach them that the great thing about living in this country is that they're free to pledge allegiance to whatever they respect and value the most, be it God or the tooth fairy or Keira Knightley. Now that I think of it, Christians use the fish symbol to represent Jesus' miracles, so maybe I'm not being as subversive as I would like. Darn. Maybe "one nation, ina gotta davita"? To those Christians who would rebuke me for my heresy, all I have to say to you is this: What would Brian Boitano do? |
