The Iowa Caucus | Saturday, 2004 January 24 - 12:36 am |
Oh, those crazy Iowans. They've really shaken up the Democratic nomination race. Who would have thought that Howard Dean would fall so far so fast? Two weeks ago, everyone was ready to crown him as the Democratic nominee... now, John Kerry is the golden boy, and Dean is a blustering idiot. And North Carolina's own John Edwards' star is rising quickly. I'm sure some are disappointed that the Democrats cannot rally behind a single candidate. Folks are worried that too much infighting will leave nothing for the battle to beat Dubya in November. But on the other hand, it's important that Democrats get this right: it's important for the nominee to be someone who will have the political savvy to not screw up. Howard, that means no unintelligible screaming fits. There's good news and bad news to be found. The good news is, voter turnout for the Iowa caucus was huge. This bodes well for Democrats' hopes in the fall. The bad news is, Democrats may still be divided. If Dean does not get the nomination, will his zealous supporters splinter off and hand Bush the presidency again (like Nader did)? Are we Democrats really stupid enough to make this mistake a second time? Let's hope not. One other thing to hope for: that the New Hampshire primary will wash out the also-ran candidates (Kucinich, Lieberman, Sharpton). It's time to get serious, folks. |
