Probing Karl Rove
Wednesday, 2005 July 13 - 11:15 pm
Boy, the Republicans sure are dancing now, aren't they?

Today President Bush declined to offer up support for his embattled aide Karl Rove, who's suspected of illegally leaking the identity of undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame. It was kind of funny, actually, because Rove was sitting right behind Bush when Bush was asked about it, with a hopeful look on his face, and all Bush would say was "it is very important not to prejudge the investigation based on media reports". Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

I like Wonkette's take on this, which is: Democrats, keep quiet. Shut up. Now is not the time to be your usual long-winded selves. Now is the time to act like the Republicans: in other words, hammer the airwaves with vague but accusatory "talking points". When talking about Rove, say things like:
  • We need to punish lawbreakers.
  • This is a question of morality and character.
  • We shouldn't show support for people who betray our country, ESPECIALLY IN THE WAKE OF 9/11.
Let the Republicans be the ones who have to dance around with subtleties and nuances. Ha ha! This could be fun.

As much as I want to believe that Rove will actually suffer some sort of legitimate consequence for this, I have lost all faith in the justice system when it comes the guilty rich and famous. Did you see Bush smirking when he talked about what a serious investigation this was and how we couldn't jump to conclusions? All that was missing was a huge wink and nod in Rove's direction, followed by a double thumbs up.

Yes, Bush was smirking - - but does he have another facial expression? If so, I've missed it. I agree that Rove will likely not suffer anything more than losing his job, but the longer Bush takes to make that happen, the uglier for the Repubs. (A good thing.) Ken, you've got the right script for the Dems.
