The news from Capitol Hill this week. Well, the Senate did its best to play Scrooge this Christmas, voting 51-50 to cut aid to the poor and elderly by billions of dollars. Dick Cheney flew in to Washington to cast the tie-breaking vote. It wasn't all bad news this week, though, as Senate Democrats were successful in blocking drilling in the Arctic Natural Wildlife Refuge. Republicans had attempted to attach the drilling measure into a must-pass defense spending bill. And in another victory for Democrats, Congress did not pass a permanent extension of the Patriot Act; instead, they only passed a one month temporary extension. Republicans, including President Bush, had previously been opposed to any temporary extensions. Some are saying that these recent events bode well for the Democratic Party. Republicans, rocked by scandals and down in the polls, are struggling to maintain party unity and a consistent message. In other words, the Republican Party of today is like the Democratic Party of four years ago. Let's hope that trend continues until the next elections. |
