American Idol Week 8: Top 5 | Tuesday, 2010 May 4 - 9:05 pm |
Siobhan went out last week; a small upset but not a shocker given her performance. This week's theme is Frank Sinatra, also known as "an invitation to butcher classics once again". Harry Connick Jr. is the mentor; he's even helping to write arrangements and playing along during the performances. Aaron: "Fly Me To the Moon". This whole thing is too old for him; the arrangement, the outfit, the style. Vocally it's good in spots, not so good in others. It's not believable. I think this is trouble for him. Casey: "Blue Skies". The pitch is waaay off right from the start, and doesn't get much better. He's straining, and it's making him visibly less confident. The vibrato is very distracting. It's really, really rough. This might be the end of the road. Crystal: "Summer Wind". This is a pretty performance; very smooth, and typically polished. Unlike Aaron and Casey, she puts power into the parts that are supposed to be powerful, and it's all very convincing. Safe. Michael: "The Way You Look Tonight". It's a nice start; vocally it's right on. In the main section, there are a couple of nasal bits, but overall it's a strong and charismatic performance. Safe. Lee: "That's Life". This is confident and fun; this captures the spirit of Sinatra better than everyone else. Vocally great, easily the best of the night. Best performance: Lee. Bottom two: Aaron, Casey. Going home: Casey. |
