Salty Snack Update
Monday, 2005 August 8 - 10:36 pm
In order to survive this diet, I'm definitely going to need some beer.

Well, my new diet isn't exactly off to a roaring start. There's sodium in EVERYTHING. Easy Cheese (you know, the aerosol cheese) has 410mg of sodium per serving! Peanut butter has 150mg per serving! IT'S CHEESE AND PEANUTS. Why is there so much sodium? No wonder the average American consumes more than TEN TIMES the recommended amount of sodium per day.

Eating out at the Macaroni Grill for lunch probably didn't do me any good. I could tell there was a ton of salt in my Pasta Milano. But eating prepared frozen meals for lunch wouldn't help: turkey pot pies have lots of sodium too. I suppose I could make my own healthy lunch in the mornings, but that would mean I'd have to not be a LAZY ASS.

In the afternoon, as I was nearly falling asleep at my desk at work, I had to break down and get a diet Coke. There's a guy I used to know who could sleep sitting up in front of his computer, with his hands on the keyboard, and text scrolling by on his monitor. He had it down to a science; you'd never know he was sleeping. I need to figure out that trick. When I fall asleep, I usually drool a little, and sometimes I shout out obscenities.

At least I was able to go running today, for the first time in two weeks. Two miles in 16:57.

I have given up so many calories a day, I refuse to also give up salt. Salt is what makes it all worth doing. mmmm, salt.

But I don't drink much, so I'd rather give up booze than salt. Everyone has their preference.

I've had to cut way back on salt because it makes my ankles bloat up to the size of grapefruit. One time when I went to the podiatrist, (who calls the swelling "edema" not big icky ankles like I do) I had some swelling and was then questioned about how much cheese and salt I ate. I would think that Easy Cheese is like the saltiest thing on the planet.

It's not bad once your taste buds get used to it, but I still get a raging craving for french fries now and again. :)

I have to eat a lot of salt because my epilepsy meds have the side effect of lowering your salt levelsl. I think I am about the only person I have ever heard of who eats salt on her doctor's recommendation!
